The Ward 5 community clean-up held June 23, 2012 was even more successful than 2011!
Thank you to all the sponsors, participants, volunteers and residents that made this day a huge success. Check your calendars for next year's event, I promise it will be bigger and better than before.
At this year's clean-up we successfully eliminated tons of refuse from going into our landfill sites, we collected the following:
- 3,750 kg/270 of scrap tires
- 9,563 kg of metal
- 10,500 kg of materials for shredding
- 15,080 kg of electronics
- 79,330 kg of general refuse
That's a total of 118,493 kg or 118.493 metric tons!
One metric ton is equivalent to 1000 kilograms or about 2200 pounds, therefore we collected 261,232 pounds - an increase of 60% collected over last year.
Included in the community clean-up was our partner Calgary Parking Authority. They had dedicated two officers for a two week period prior to the clean-up plus, one officer on the day of the clean-up. A total of 218 tags were issued, 167 tows for various infractions, such as no plates, expired plates, 52 vehicles and/or trailers were issued a 72 hour notice to be removed and they found two stolen vehicles.
Thank you for your food bank donations. We collected $1,248.71 and approximately 485 pounds of food for our local food bank locations.
In preparation for the 2013 Ward 5 community clean-up, I need your feedback and suggestions. Feel free to forward your comments, suggestions and/or companies you would like to see participate in our event to my assistant, Lesley at EAWard5@calgary.ca.
Again, thank you for your support in making this event a huge success!
