Secondary suites are self-contained living space located within a single-detached home or backyard, with an independent cooking, sleeping and bath area. They are important for providing affordable housing options and can add to the vibrancy and sustainability of communities where conditions allow.
All secondary suites must provide:
- A parking space
- An outdoor amenity like a small green space or balcony
- One window in each bedroom that can be opened from the inside, accessible, unobstructed and large enough for anyone to fit through in case of an emergency
- Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
- At least one exit that leads directly outside and swings inward
The City of Calgary operates a Secondary Suite Registry for all legal suites that meet all of the above conditions, have the proper permits and have passed safety inspections. Is the suite you are renting or planning to rent safe and legal? Check here to find out.
