Last fall I was excited to share with you a new pilot
project that converted 5th Avenue SW downtown from a one-way only to
a two-way to provide another option for Ward 6 residents’ commute home. I am
happy to provide you an update on this pilot project. The City is planning on
engaging stakeholders and evaluating the system to see if permanent
infrastructure is feasible.
Last year, prior to the implementation, The City engaged
stakeholders on temporary infrastructure for the pilot, including local
businesses. This lane reversal is not
expected to impact any on-street parking. Monitoring has occurred since the
pilot commenced, but final traffic counts will be conducted in September and
October as traffic volumes at this time of year are more indicative of commuter
volumes compared to summer. Engagement is anticipated to begin in September,
after which time a decision on permanent infrastructure will be made. Just as it is now, two-way operation will be
at all times except 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. Monday to Friday. For more information and
to give your opinion online about this lane reversal, please visit calgary.ca/5ave.
