5 Avenue SW Lane Reversal Project
As our city experiences growth and expansion, traffic during peak times can increase the time it takes you to get to and home from work. For those heading west out of downtown after work, there is a new project that may improve your commute time! Starting on May 19, 2015, a six-month trial lane reversal system on 5 Avenue SW between 7 Street and the west-end of downtown will be implemented during the evening peak hour, 3:30 -6:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Check out the video simulation
to see exactly how the lane reversal will operate.
Lane reversal systems optimize the use of existing infrastructure without the high cost and disruption of road construction projects. Underutilized inbound lanes will be reduced to three adding an additional two westbound lanes on 5 Avenue SW. Motorists can enter the lane reversal from 7, 8 or 9 Street SW. One of the reversed lanes will end at 10 Street as a left turn onto 10 Street SW. The second reversed lane will end at the 4 Avenue SW and Bow Trail intersection. This junction will be controlled by a new traffic light. Traffic barricades and other control devices will be used to operate the lane reversal during the trial. To ensure public safety, Calgary Police Service and Roads will be on site during the first week of the new pilot.
