It was recently reported that Calgary has some of the most expensive seniors’ housing in Canada; headlines like these catch our attention. While Calgary can benefit from an increase in affordable seniors’ housing, there are immediate options for Calgary seniors who need affordable housing.

So, what are the facts on Calgary’s affordable seniors’ housing?

Currently Calgary has more than 5,200 subsidized independent living units and more than 900 subsidized supportive living units. Alberta has more public and not-for-profit seniors’ housing than any other province in Canada, based on population.

Recent Alberta Seniors Communities & Housing Association (ASCHA) research shows that these subsidies are quite deep. Subsidized independent living units are usually governed by a rent-geared-to-income formula that means seniors only pay a maximum of 30 per cent of their income in rent. ASCHA’s online seniors housing directory,, provides a listing of public, not-for-profit and private seniors housing options. Their directory currently shows that approximately half of the options are rent-geared-to-income, targeted to lower income seniors.

Silvera for Seniors is the largest subsidized seniors’ housing provider in Calgary and is included in the ASCHA directory. Average rent at one of the Silvera communities for an independent living unit is about $500 per month.

Another concern for seniors is that seniors’ housing often includes much more than just housing, especially if the residence offers supportive living. These additional costs can include meals, utilities, housekeeping, 24-hour staff support and life enrichment programs. Silvera operates a subsidized supportive living program on behalf of the Government of Alberta in Calgary, and average rents for these communities are actually less than $1,300 per month.
Older adults living on low and fixed incomes in Calgary definitely have options, and there is no reason for them to stay alone in homes when they need more support.

Silvera’s Westview campus, located at the corner of Sarcee and Glenmore Trails, offers immediate access to affordable seniors’ housing.  You can take a virtual tour, or call 403-240-4920 to learn about this supportive living community. You can learn more about Silvera’s Westview campus here:
