Special Remembrance Day Ceremony - 100th Anniversary of Camp Sarcee
On Remembrance Day, you are invited to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Camp Sarcee at Battalion Park. The numbers on Signal Hill were built by soldiers who trained at Camp Sarcee before travelling to Europe in WWI. The numbers 137, 113, 151, and 51 represent the regimental numbers of their battalions. These 16,000 stones signify an important historical site in Western Canada which recognizes the efforts of Canadian soldiers in the war.
For the 100th Anniversary, the community worked with City Administration and the Planning and Urban Development Committee to have this site recognized as a Municipal Historic Resource. Council unanimously passed this designation on July 27, 2015. I will be bringing a Notice of Motion to Council in November seeking support for an application for Federal Historic Designation of this site.
We have been honoured to work with the King’s Own Calgary Regiment for the past three years to host a Remembrance Day ceremony at the site. Please join us on this year on November 11, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Battalion Park for our centennial ceremony to remember the soldiers of Camp Sarcee and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
We encourage you and your family to walk to the ceremony. Pedestrians can access from Signal Hill Drive until 10:30am. No parking is available on Signal Hill Drive SW. If you are driving to the ceremony, parking is available at the Signal Hill Shopping Centre. Attendees can then continue up the stairs behind Staples to the ceremony site. If you require assistance to the site, please contact our office at 403.268.1646.
