Ring Road Downstream Impacts Update

  • Share

Ward 6 official websiteAs the Southwest Calgary Ring Road (SWCRR) begins construction, the City of Calgary is planning to mitigate downstream impacts in several ways throughout Ward 6. As part of the SWCRR, Alberta Transportation is building a complex interchange at Highway 8 and Sarcee Trail SW, which requires The City to ensure traffic safety and manage congestion by building an overpass at Richmond Road and Sarcee Trail SW. Information sessions regarding this interchange are anticipated in the latter half of November this year. Other impacts include the opening of a new road called Westhills Way SW, behind the Westhills shopping centre, which is already underway. This road will be open for public use once the SWCRR is completed. For more information on this project, please visit

I continue to work with the Provincial Government to encourage the announcement of a construction start date for the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR).   This final segment of the Stoney Trail expressway circling the city will connect the Highway 8 stretch of the SWCRR to Stoney Trail at the TransCanada Highway, essentially along the western side of our Ward.

I believe it is vital to address Ward 6 traffic congestion with a timely announcement of the WCRR. Among many benefits, the WCRR will help solve our local access issues as a consequence of the closure of Winsport’s private road.   Also, it is estimated the WCRR will reduce traffic north and south bound on Sarcee Trial by 30-40%, alleviating significant traffic pressure at the Bow Trail intersection.  Eastbound Bow Trail traffic turning north at Sarcee Trail will also be reduced as the WCRR route will provide more efficiencies for the many seeking connection to the TransCanada or other northerly destinations.

Finally, design is being finalized for improvements at the intersection of Bow Trail and 85 Street SW, including the widening of Bow Trail SW between Old Banff Coach Road and 85 Street SW. The City anticipates beginning construction next year.

You can stay up-to-date on all Ward 6 downstream impacts on my website,, and we will continue to provide updates in The Ward 6 Report.  The next edition will be sent out in November. As we receive updates and information sessions are confirmed, we will be advertising these updates on our website, as well as @pootmans Twitter and Facebook pages. In addition, we look forward to being able to provide you updates on the status of finishing the Calgary Ring Road with the West leg, which has yet to be announced by the Government of Alberta.
