Ring Road Update
The Government of Alberta is moving ahead with the Southwest Calgary Ring Road (SWCRR) which is expected to be open in fall 2021. This includes the expansion of Highway 8 from the 69 Street SW Interchange to Lott Creek, which was originally apart of the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR). The City of Calgary Transportation Planning Department is reviewing the downstream impacts of the SWCRR and its impacts on local traffic. Recommendations from the review will be compiled this fall and are scheduled for presentation to the Transportation and Transit Standing Policy Committee on November 18, 2015.
Although the WCRR was committed to a 2020-2021 start date by the previous provincial government, as of mid-September, the newly elected government has not yet confirmed plans for this portion of the ring road. The Government of Alberta plans to table a budget after the legislature resumes on October 26, 2015. Transportation Planning is waiting on this announcement in order to move forward on planned projects in Ward 6 including the Bow Trail Widening Project scheduled to start next construction season. Other projects including modification on the Bow Trail and 85 Street SW intersection is to be scheduled once the WCRR is approved.
