The Alberta Government has committed $2.963 billion to Calgary and Edmonton Ring Roads over the next five years. In the Alberta Budget Speech this afternoon, Minister Ceci noted the government will have a number of additional announcements in the coming months addressing roads and other key infrastructure areas once investment plans are solidified. We are optimistic that these announcements will include the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR). As the Southwest Calgary Ring Road (SWCRR) is on schedule to start construction in late summer 2016, the City of Calgary will continue to assess downstream impacts of the SWCRR and plan for the overlap of time where the SWCRR is complete and the WCRR opens. During the interim, how drivers will use several roadways—including Sarcee Trail SW, Bow Trail SW, and Richmond Road SW—will need to be analyzed. As we are hopeful for an announcement regarding a start date for WCRR in the coming months, the City will delay making any major budget decisions until there is a clear understanding of when construction and anticipated completion of WCRR is expected.
