Ward 6 News: West LRT Park and Ride Lots

  • Share

Ward 6 ReportThe Ward 6 Office has received some inquires about parking, fees and reserved access for LRT Park and Ride Lots. Park and Ride Lots offer regular and reserved parking. Regular parking is free and is on a first come, first serve basis. Reserved parking is $80 per month and is reserved Monday – Friday from 2 a.m. – 10 a.m.; reserved parking spots become regular parking after 10 a.m. weekdays and on weekends and holidays. Once reserved parking has reached capacity, those interested in purchasing a reserved parking spot go on a wait list. Like any reservation, the individuals holding that reservation have the expectation that what they reserved will be available for them during the reservation time regardless of their actual usage.

Before the current service model, there was no reserved parking and parking cost $3/day. Entire lots would fill very early which led to implementing the current monthly reserved program in order to address customer requests for certainty when making their trip. The principle of reserved parking at Calgary Transit Park and Ride lots is committed to by Calgary Transit and by Calgary City Council. When reserved parking was implemented in April of 2011, it was determined by City Council that based on demand, up to 50% of the available parking spaces at the C-Train Stations would be used for reserved parking.

When the discussion about the reservation window took place (the starting and ending times for exclusive use of the reserved spaces), 10 a.m. provided the most flexibility for those making the monthly investment into the program while balancing the availability of parking later in the day. While Calgary Transit strives to offer choice to meet the needs of as many customers as possible, there are some areas, like parking at major transit hubs, where demand is greater than supply.

At the Sirocco Station and 69 Street Station, the last station on West LRT line, reserved parking has always been high in demand and both stations have a waiting list for reserved parking.  At 69 Street Station there are 827 parking spaces at this station, of which 413 are reserved parking, and 414 remain as free parking.  Although sometimes the reserved spots are not being used, all of the 413 spaces have been paid for and are reserved. The reserved parking customers are required to make a renewal payment for their reserved spot by 15th of current month to reserve for the following month.  If any customers fail to make the payment, their reservation is cancelled and offered to the next customer on wait list.

I am currently working closely with Administration to understand what parking enhancements at the Sirocco C-Train Station may be possible.  Once ideas including transit orientated development with a structured parkade and a pedestrian overpass at 17th Avenue SW seem feasible, a public engagement process will begin, possibly within the next two years. I am also working with Administration, Calgary Regional Partnership, and the County of Rocky View to assess their interest in a remote Park and Ride Lot west of Calgary in order to encourage out of town commuters to utilize that lot.
