Electronic Residential Parking Permits Coming Soon

Residential Parking

On May 9, 2017, Council approved changes to the Calgary Traffic Bylaw that allow the Residential Parking Permit (RPP) program to use electronic rather than physical permits. I am looking forward to the greater efficiencies of this automated system and the ease of use for Ward 6 residents as Calgary Parking Authority rolls out the program over the next 14 months.

The framework of the program is not changing, and residents will not be asked to pay any new fees.

Starting on August 1, 2017, residential zones will be transitioned to the online RPP system as zones come up for renewal next year. With this new permit system, permits will be valid for two years instead of one!

During this first year while the program is being rolled out, you will be asked to register for an online account during your regular renewal time (or call Calgary Parking Authority for assistance). As per usual, you will receive a reminder notice in the mail when you are eligible to renew your permit during this transition.

Once your zone has moved to the online system, there will be no more physical residential or visitor parking permits. These permits will be managed using the online RPP system. Enforcement of the residential parking zones will be done primarily by photo enforcement and supplemented by our mobile enforcement officers who will respond to requests from residents via our Customer Solutions Centre.

If you have visitors parking in your zone, rather than providing them with a paper parking permit, you can register their license plate online (or call Calgary Parking Authority) for up to two weeks at a time. The visit can also be terminated for shorter durations.

Residential Parking Zones

The electronic program rollout dates for Ward 6 neighbourhoods is based on the expiry dates of the respective zones. As such, you can expect to transition your permit in your community as follows:

  • March 31, 2018: Christie Park (Zone CHR)
  • April 30, 2018: Strathcona (Zone STR) and Glendale (Zone GDL)
  • May 31, 2018: Signal Hill (Zone SIG)
  • June 30, 2018: Springbank Hill (Zone SBH)
  • August 31, 2018: Aspen Woods (Zone ASP)
*Please note: Rollout dates may change to accommodate operation requirements

Fun fact: This technology is an expansion of what Calgary Parking Authority originally developed for downtown Calgary street parking enforcement. It was so successful that, not only is it being applied to the residential parking permits here, it is being sold to other cities!
