Close on the heels of last spring’s inaugural poet laureate program, the Calgary Heritage Authority and the City of Calgary announced Calgary’s first Historian Laureate, Harry Sanders. The position was made official in June, when Harry was presented a laurel crown by Heritage Authority chair, Scott Jolliffe, in a hilarious history/poetry faceoff between poet laureate Kris Demeanor and Harry on Stephen Avenue. The Calgary 2012 celebrations and a number of important centennials, including Century Homes, The Calgary Public Library, Calgary Recreation, and the Calgary Stampede, have kept both of our laureates very busy. Kris and Harry are often seen together, marking noteworthy events and celebrations with poetry and fascinating tales of Calgary’s past.
