The Cornerstone Multi-Service Development includes a Fire Station, Household Hazardous Waste drop-off location and future affordable housing. It is part of The City of Calgary's Integrated Civic Facility Planning (ICFP) Program. Building multi-service facilities and sites on City-owned land allows The City to use investment and partnerships efficiently to provide more services from one location. It also enables The City to collaborate to build facilities and sites that reflect thriving and evolving neighborhoods.

Integrated mixed-service facilities and sites are fiscally responsible and reduce the overall cost of new facilities by co-locating more than one service on a site. This aligns with the Council's direction to identify more efficient land use opportunities, build fewer corporate sites, and reduce operating costs. The City aims to achieve LEED Gold certification for this development in alignment with The City’s Sustainable Building Policy.

Construction will start in early February 2024 and is expected to be completed by spring 2025.

Cornerstone Fire Station

The new Cornerstone Fire Station is ideally located to ensure a fast fire and medical response for those in need in Cornerstone and nearby communities. Cornerstone Fire Station will replace the temporary Skyview Fire Station in Skyview Ranch.

When it comes to fires, seconds matter. Every fire burns differently depending on the materials, fuel sources, and weather conditions. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fires can spread to 1100 % in the first four minutes. They can also spread to multiple homes in under 10 minutes. Fire personnel and equipment must arrive on the scene quickly to reduce harm to people and property.

Over half of the incidents the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responds to are medical calls. CFD crews are often first on the scene administering medical or life-saving care.

Residential Household Hazardous Waste drop-off Program

This drop-off location is where residents bring unwanted paint cans, oil, propane tanks, cleaning products, and other household chemicals. The items are typically found in hardware and grocery stores.

An additional residential Household Hazardous Waste drop-off location will help the community safely dispose of corrosive, flammable, poisonous, or explosive items. Each added new location typically services residents within a 5 km convenience zone.

The Calgary Fire Department and Calgary Waste & Recycling Services partner to offer locations outside several Calgary fire stations where citizens can safely drop off household hazardous waste.

Affordable Housing

Calgary Housing plans to develop future affordable housing at this location. The City of Calgary strives to create affordable housing across Calgary. It recognizes affordable housing as an integral part of complete communities. With one in five Calgary households struggling to pay for housing costs, this development phase is part of The City’s direction to ensure that low to moderate-income Calgarians have access to a safe and stable place to call home in all neighbourhoods.
