AMBER Alerts - FAQs

AMBER Alert is a public notification system used to help locate an abducted child, or an adult with a proven mental or physical disability. ​Please see the AMBER Alert Program in Alberta for information on what alerts are and how they work.

What's the criteria for an amber alert to be issued?

AMBER Alerts are issued in the believed abduction of a child or an adult with a proven mental or physical disability when it is believed their life is in danger. Alerts are only issued by police agencies and are based on a number of strict criteria.

What other alerting systems are in place for public notifications?

The Alberta Emergency Alert system​ is available for a wide range of emergencies, and this is supplemented by the media and press releases.

What sorts of emergencies are broadcasted to the public?

In Addition to AMBER Alerts, the Alberta Emergency Alert System is also available to immediately transmit emergency information to the public for emergencies such as floods, severe weather, dangerous goods incidents, etc. The system uses radio and TV broadcast signals, along with email,  Twitter​ and Facebook updates.

Is there a training session I can attend?

There is no specific training in AMBER Alerts, except for Authorized Users of the system. The provincial website provides great detail about the program.
