Auto theft criminal code charges

New Criminal Code Charges relating to auto theft

Effective April 29, 2011 the following Criminal Code offences came into effect directly relating to motor vehicle theft.

Section 333.1 Motor Vehicle Theft – This new section creates a separate offence of theft in relation to motor vehicles. The value of the vehicle is not an element of the offence so it does not matter if the vehicle is valued at over or under $5,000.

Section 353.1 Tampering with Vehicle Identification Number – This new section creates an offence of altering, removing or obliterating the VIN on a motor vehicle.

Section 355.2 and Section 355.4 Trafficking in Stolen Property – These new sections create offences for importing or exporting stolen property or possessing stolen property for the purpose of trafficking.
