The City of Calgary is working with the community of Montgomery to address concerns regarding pedestrian and traffic safety on 16 Avenue N.W., between 46 Street and 49 Street. The planned improvements for this area are designed to improve traffic operations by directing vehicles to follow designated traffic lanes through this area, increase the safety of pedestrians trying to cross 16 Avenue at Home Rd N.W., and prevent motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents from occurring.
◦ Powercord slack will be tightened by Enmax◦ New traffic signals will be installed at 16 Avenue N.W. and Home Road; ◦ On 16 Avenue N.W. curbs, pedestrian refuges, sidewalks, and medians will be constructed and crosswalk lines will be painted;◦ Curb extensions will be constructed on Home Road; ◦ Pavement overlay will be done on Home Road◦ Pavement markings will be painted on Home Road
The Montgomery Community Association and the
Montgomery BRZ will be working together to approve the artwork that will be
displayed on the light post banners.
We spoke to many Calgarians and want to thank everyone who joined the conversation! We heard many ideas about peoples’ visions for the project.
In the spring of 2015, the community voiced concerns about poor facilities and connections for pedestrians, and vehicles making illegal or unsafe left turns into parking lots along 16 Avenue N.W. between 46 Street and 49 Street. There were also concerns about poor facilities and connections for cyclists within the study area. To address these concerns, The City prepared a preliminary design that was shared with the community at an open house in November 2015. The preliminary design proposed upgrades in the study area that would improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, while also enhancing the look of the streetscape, and was presented to the community at an information session in the spring of 2016. Since then construction drawings were created, the project was tendered, and now construction is set to begin in the spring or summer of 2017, with an estimated construction completion date of the fall of 2017.
Based on feedback received from the community at the open house and on the online discussion forum, the project team has revised the preliminary design. The updated design still aims to improve the safety and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, while enhancing the look of the streetscape.
