For the 2012-2014 business planning and budgeting cycle, The City undertook a new approach to business planning and budgeting called “Our City. Our Budget. Our Future.”

A conversation with citizens about City services and priorities.

Between February and May 2011, more than 23,000 Calgarians, community organizations and City employees participated in an extensive stakeholder engagement process, which asked participants about values and priorities for City services and the pros, cons and trade-offs of future spending priorities. Participants provided their input through face-to-face community sessions, a variety of online tools and social media channels.

Our City. Our Budget. Our Future. marks the first time citizens have had the opportunity to provide their input before the development of The City’s business plans and budgets.

Transforming Government
How engagement input was used

The engagement results were considered by Council on June 28, 2011 when it finalized Council’s Fiscal Plan for Calgary and approved indicative tax rates based on municipal inflation and population growth. From July to October, Administration developed proposed 2012-2014 business plans and budgets based on Council’s direction and what was heard in the engagement results.

Approval of 2012-2014 business plans and budget

On November 10, the proposed business plans and budgets were released to Council and the public online. Four public information sessions were held from November 14 to 19 to share information and provided citizens an opportunity to speak with department representatives. Citizens also had new opportunities to submit comments on the proposed plans and budgets online and pre-register to present to Council during budget deliberation. Council approved the 2012-2014 business plans and budgets on November 29 following seven days of budget deliberation.
