Plan It Calgary Public Hearing 2009 June 23-25

On June 23, 2009, City Administration submitted three documents for public debate and consideration by City Council.  These were:

  • The proposed Municipal Development Plan (MDP)
  • The proposed Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP)
  • A new Transportation System Bylaw that aligns with the proposed plans

After a three-day Public Hearing of Council, the proposed MDP has received first reading and requires two additional readings prior to being approved by Council. The proposed CTP and Transportation System Bylaw were "tabled", and will be considered by Council at the same time as the second and third reading of the proposed MDP.

Council directed City Administration to review the approximately 100 proposed amendments to the MDP and CTP as submitted to the Mayor by members of Council at the end of the Public Hearing. City Administration will prepare a supplementary report on the proposed amendments and return to Council no later than December, 2009.

The minutes of the Special Public Hearing of Council, including the amendments, can be found here, and selecting the minutes for the 2009-06-23 Special Meeting of Council.

Over the coming months, updated information about Plan It Calgary, the MDP, CTP and Transportation System Bylaw will be available on our website.

Plan It Calgary Microsite

You've heard the buzz surrounding Plan It, the City of Calgary's long-term vision for the future, but what does it really mean to you? This Plan It mini website was created by the City to explain what Plan It is all about and how your city may look in the not-too-distant future.

Plan It Calgary Plans

Plan It Calgary is the integrated new Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP) setting out a long-term direction for sustainable growth to accommodate the 1.3 million additional people expected to make Calgary their home in the next six decades.

To read these plans or supporting documents, please visit the Plan It Calgary Plans page.

Key directions

The Plan It Calgary project completed an integrated land use and transportation review and identified that Calgary needs to begin moving towards a more compact urban form. To achieve this, Calgary needs to manage where and how growth is accommodated. Working with communities and businesses to direct change in the right direction and at the right time is critical in ensuring Calgary becomes a more sustainable city. A number of strategic key directions were identified to have the greatest impact on guiding the long-term sustainability of Calgary.

Please visit the Key Directions page for more information.

Public engagement and events

The purpose of engaging the public is to develop a plan that reflects the interests and concerns of affected stakeholders and to assist decision makers in being responsive to public concerns and suggestions. It is also a method of testing public perceptions of growth and gage potential policy options that would garner the most support by the community.

Please visit the Public Engagement page for more information.

Research

In addition to scenario planning and local case studies, Plan It Calgary has commissioned a body of research, which will broaden the base of qualitative and quantitative information going into the development of the MDP and CTP.

Please visit the Research page for more information.

Resources

Plan It Calgary has held a number of public engagement events, including the Plan It Calgary Summit and a variety of Open Houses. All of the material, such as video, presentations and photos, presented at these events is available on the Plan It Calgary Resources page.
