Anderson Road to 90 Avenue S.W.
Project update
The 14 Street S.W. Corridor Upgrades project is currently on hold.
Feedback obtained at the November open house from surrounding communities and commuters indicated citizens were looking for the project to go beyond the original scope. The City's own analysis found the funding designated for the 14 Street S.W. widening may not be sufficient to significantly improve traffic flow and address the needs of the adjacent areas. It was therefore determined the funds allocated to this project can be more effectively used by other road infrastructure projects.
A follow-up open house was planned for 2009, but will be postponed until the project is re-instated. Transportation Infrastructure will communicate these developments to Community Associations, residents, and commuters as required.
Project background
Council approved $20 million for upgrades to the 14 Street S.W. Corridor, including adding one lane in each direction between Anderson Road and 90 Avenue S.W., and improving the existing intersections at Anderson Road, Southland Drive and 90 Avenue S.W. The upgrades are in response to residential growth in the southwest, specifically south of Fish Creek Park.
Calgary has experienced significant growth in the past 10 years, and traffic volumes in the south have increased considerably. As part of the preliminary design, The City has updated the traffic forecasts for the area to ensure these upgrades are the most effective way to address existing and future traffic demands. The Corridor currently operates at a low level of service and is not expected to effectively accommodate traffic demands in the next 10 -15 years.
Project scope
- Widening 14 Street S.W. from four to six lanes between Anderson Road and 90 Avenue S.W.
- Upgrading the intersections at Anderson Road, Southland Drive and 90 Avenue S.W.
Project timeline
Predesign is complete. This project is currently on hold.
Public involvement
Approximately 450 people attended a public open house to introduce the project on November 4, 2008. Attendees had the opportunity to view preliminary plans and provide feedback on the project. City of Calgary staff were available to answer questions.
