The City of Calgary: 52 Street SE Widening Project - Glenmore Trail to 90 Avenue S.E.

52 Street S.E. Widening Project

Transportation Infrastructure

Project background

Calgary's high level of population growth and increase in traffic volumes in recent years has created a huge demand on existing road infrastructure. This is particularly evident in the southeast quadrant of the city where there has been a significant increase in commercial truck traffic and the movement of goods.

As a result The City is moving forward on the project to widen 52 Street S.E. When completed, this project will see 52 Street widened from two lanes to six lanes from Glenmore Trail to 114 Avenue S.E., and from two lanes to four lanes from 114 Avenue S.E. to 130 Avenue S.E.

As an urban project, the 52 Street S.E. Widening involves a massive amount of 52 St north of 130 Aveearth work; in phase 2 alone, over 120,000 cubic metres of fill will be used. That's equivalent to covering the football field at McMahon Stadium with almost 20 metres or 64 feet of fill.

The overall budget for the project is $110 million and includes upgrading and enhancing the road and intersection systems, creating access roads, upgrading storm systems, pipeline relocation, land acquisitions, enhanced street lights and traffic signals, and development of a regional pathway system.

This project has been divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1…Widening of 52 Street from Glenmore Trail to 90 Avenue S.E.
  • Phase 2…Widening of 52 Street from 114 Avenue to 130 Avenue S.E.
  • Phase 3…Widening of 52 Street from 90 Avenue to 106 Avenue S.E.

* 52 Street between 106 Avenue S.E. and 114 Avenue S.E. was widened to six lanes at an earlier time.

  • Stage 1: Widening of 52 Street from south of 90 Avenue S.E. to south of 86 Avenue S.E. Completed in 2008. 52 Street construction
  • Stage 2: Widening of 52 Street from south of 86 Avenue to the Ensteel property - Completed.
  • Stage 3: Widening of 52 Street from the Ensteel property to Glenmore Trail. Target completion—2010.

Phase 2: 114 Avenue S.E. to 130 Avenue S.E.

  • Stage 1: New northbound lanes of 52 Street - Completed.
  • Stage 2: New southbound lanes of 52 Street. Target completion - November 2010.
