Safe Garbage Disposal
We are serious about safety – yours and others. We need your help to ensure that we can collect the trash in a safe manner. Please find below three key safety concerns where we need your assistance. Please call 3-1-1 if you have questions about how to safely dispose of your trash. Remember, if a waste collector can't deal with your trash in a safe manner, it will be left behind.
Sharp Materials
When sharp objects such as nails, broken glass, and needles are placed in the trash in an unsafe manner they create a hazard for you, your family and for waste collectors. Protect yourself and others by disposing of your trash in a safe manner. Place sharp objects in a puncture proof container or protective wrapping (such as cardboard) and keep everyone safe.
Heavy Bags
When bags are too heavy, they present a safety risk to you, your family and your waste collector. On a typical day, your waste collector lifts over 12,000 kilograms of trash – the equivalent of lifting two elephants. Lighten the load for yourself and for others by ensuring that no bag weighs more than 20 kg (44 lbs). As a rule of thumb – if you can lift the bag with one hand it should be okay.
Hazardous Materials
When hazardous materials such as motor oil, paint, propane, household chemicals, etc. are placed in the garbage they create a hazard for you, your family (including pets), your waste collector, and the environment. Protect yourself and others by taking household chemicals to a year round drop-off center located at select fire stations and all landfills. Call 3-1-1 to find the most convenient location for you.
