The City provides unique employment opportunities for new or recent university engineering graduates who are registered, or in the process of registering, as Members-in-Training with APEGGA
(Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta).
An Engineer-in-Training (EIT) may be employed with The City in one of three ways:
- EIT Rotation Program
- Temporary position (also known as limited term) e.g., for a project with an expected end date, or
- Trainee in a regular, established engineer position
Individuals hired into the EIT Rotation Program are assigned to an area in one of the participating business units for approximately one year and then re-assigned on a yearly basis until they complete the experience requirements to obtain a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
EIT report directly to a Professional Engineer for the purpose of on-the-job training and day-to-day performance management. Decisions regarding job rotations, pay for performance, training, etc. are the responsibility of the EIT Rotation Program Coordinator in Corporate Engineering.
At the end of the four-year program, or once the EIT has obtained a Professional Engineer designation, the EIT is responsible for seeking placement through the competitive process in a regular position (established or temporary) in The City.
Individuals may be allowed a grace period of up to 6 months after becoming a Professional Engineer to obtain a position outside the EIT Rotation Program. During that period, the individual's salary is maintained within the EIT salary range.
