The City of Calgary: Commuter Challenge Introduction

Commuter Challenge Introduction

Transportation Planning

A Calgary Tradition since 1991

The Commuter Challenge is a national, week-long event that coincides with Clean Air Day Canada and National Environment Week. At the heart of the Commuter Challenge is a fun and friendly competition between Calgary workplaces, schools and post-secondary institutions for the recognition of being a leader in supporting healthier commuting.

Each weekday morning, individuals at participating workplaces, schools and post-secondary institutions record how they made their trip. Pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, carpoolers and teleworkers are tallied as healthier commuters, and a daily participation rate is calculated. At week's end, the workplace, school and post-secondary institution with the highest percent participation rate in each size category is declared a winner.

NOTE:  Register your school or workplace under the appropriate category on the Canadian Commuter Challenge website External Site.

The Commuter Challenge provides an excellent opportunity for participating workplaces, schools and post-secondary institutions to garner the respect of their employees, clients, competitors and the community at large by demonstrating their commitment towards the health of their employees and the health of the environment.

Primary Objectives

  • To promote healthier commuting that sustains personal health, social vitality and vibrant communities.
  • To lower the number of trips made in single occupant vehicles thereby reducing green house gas emissions and improving overall air quality.

Clean Air Day Canada

Clean Air Day was proclaimed by the Federal Government of Canada in 1999 to increase public awareness and action on two key environmental priorities: clean air and climate change. Clean Air Day falls on the Wednesday of Environment Week.

Environment Week

Environment Week is a national event devoted to environmental issues and activities that focus on preserving, protecting and restoring our environment. Environment Week is the first week in June that includes June 5th, World Environment Day.
