Calgarians say their quality of life is getting better. Their neighbourhoods are safer. And they applaud The City of Calgary's efforts to improve the environment. The 2009 Citizen Satisfaction Survey included questions about the quality of life, contact with The City and quality of civic services.
Survey highlights:
- For the first time in three years, positive momentum is noted in attitudes related to quality of life in Calgary. When rating their overall quality of life, three in four Calgarians (76 per cent) said it is "good" to "very good", an increase over the 2008 rating of 69 per cent.
- Roadwork/improvements/easing congestion, improvements to public transportation, infrastructure upgrade/expansion, and improvements in recycling/garbage services are contributing factors to Calgarians' perceptions of an improved quality of life.
- Ninety one per cent of Calgarians say the overall quality of service provided by The City is "good".
- Efforts around improved policing and the environment, in particular the City operated recycling program (83% satisfied), resonated with Calgarians.
- Eight in 10 (82 per cent) endorsed the job The City was doing to protect the environment, above the 75 per cent rating of a year ago.
- Of those surveyed, 78 per cent said they felt safer in their neighbourhood compared to 70 per cent in 2008.
- Infrastructure/traffic/roads top the list of the most important issues facing Calgary with 34 per cent saying it should receive the greatest attention. The next five most frequent issues are transit (24%); crime/safety/policing (24%); education (11%); healthcare (9%); taxes and fees (7%). The City does not manage all of the issues mentioned by Calgarians, most notably education and healthcare.
Every year since 1997 The City of Calgary has asked citizens to rate our performance as an organization. The City was one of the first Canadian municipal governments to regularly ask citizens to rate our programs and services.
The survey, conducted between August 31 and September 6, 2009 by research firm Ipsos Reid, provides The City with good indicators of what Calgarians perceive as contributing the most to their overall satisfaction and allows The City to target efforts where they will have the greatest impact.
