Noise Barrier Retrofit Program - Construction

The Noise Barrier Retrofit Program is an ongoing City of Calgary initiative to reduce the impact of traffic noise levels on residents living directly adjacent to any major street, expressway or freeway (as defined by The City of Calgary's Roadway Classification Map).

Potential locations for the Retrofit Program are identified on a complaint basis. Property owners who feel they have a noise issue can obtain a Traffic Noise Investigation Request Form from Transportation Planning.

The City of Calgary prioritizes the construction of noise barriers according to technical and economic feasibility. Potential locations are ranked according to the expected benefit / cost ratio of the project based on factors such as the severity of the noise problem, the amount of noise reduction that will be achieved with noise attenuation, and the number of residential units that will benefit.

City Council approved $2 million in funding from the Capital Budget for the Noise Barrier Retrofit Program in 2007 and $1.5 million in funding for 2008. The candidate list is periodically reprioritized; the new priority list will be presented to City Council again in 2009.

*The current priority list (April 2007) is as follows:

1. Southland Drive & 24 Street S.W. (north side)
2. Canyon Meadows Drive (east side) - Canterbury Drive to Cantrell Drive S.W. 
3. Strathcona Boulevard (both sides) - south of Bow Trail to Strathcona Drive S.W.
4. Country Hills Boulevard (north side) - Sarcee Trail to Citadel Link N.W.
5. Nose Hill Drive (east side) - south of Hawkstone Drive N.W.
6. 90 Avenue (north side) - west of 16 Street S.W. to Bay Ridge Drive S.W. 
7. Crowchild Trail (east side) - south of 16 Avenue N.W. to 14 Avenue N.W.
8. Country Hills Boulevard (north side) - west of Hampstead Road to Hamptons Boulevard N.W. (west leg)
9. Country Hills Boulevard (north side) - Panorama Hills Boulevard to west of Panorama Hills Green N.W.
10. Anderson Road (both sides) - Acadia Drive to Bonaventure Drive S.E.
11. Southland Drive (south side) - east of Maplecreek Drive S.E.
12. Memorial Drive (north side) - McDougall Court to east 6 Street N.E.

*The current priority list has not been approved for construction. Construction is contingent upon a survey of area residents and available funding.

Once approved for construction, the projects are tendered and the contract is awarded to the company with the lowest bid, and includes landscaping and any necessary repairs to sidewalks around the completed noise wall.
