Fire safety box program
Firefighters responding to an emergency call need to rely on accurate and timely information about a building, its contents and its fire safety system.
The Fire Safety Box program ensures that any building or business that requires a Fire Safety Plan keeps it on site and readily accessible to fire crews in the event of a situation or emergency.
The program is primarily designed to assist fire crews at times when the buildings are closed or when information about the structure is not readily available. Firefighters will obtain access to closed buildings through the exterior key lockbox.
Businesses can obtain a Fire Safety Plan binder from the Calgary Fire Department with the necessary instructions to assist them in compiling the required information. Upon completion, this information is held in the issued binder and locked in a Fire Safety Box for ready access by fire crews.
The Fire Safety Box must be mounted on a wall at specified heights and distances from a principal entrance, as described in the binder information. Boxes are available for purchase through the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). Other suppliers are listed in the binder.
For more information about Fire Safety Boxes, call the Calgary Fire Prevention Bureau at 3-1-1 or 403-268-2489 from outside of the Calgary area.
