On April 1, 2009, the government of Alberta, through Alberta Health Services (AHS), assumed responsibility for emergency ground ambulance service in Alberta.
The government announced its intention last year to take over responsibility for ground ambulance service throughout Alberta in order to integrate this service with all health services in the province and improve service to citizens.
As far as you, your family and your neighbours are concerned, nothing changes as a result of this transfer. When you need medical help, call 9-1-1 and EMS will respond just as they have always done. In fact, it will be the same highly trained paramedics responding to your call now as responded prior to April 1.
It will take some time for Alberta Health Services to develop a province-wide look for EMS so don't be surprised if you still see the words The City of Calgary on vehicles and uniforms for some time to come. Also, The City of Calgary will continue to support Alberta Health Services to help make the transfer successful and to help Alberta Health Services maintain the continuity of service.
In Calgary, we have enjoyed a top-notch ambulance system for many years. The City of Calgary Emergency Medical Services has been a world class leader in delivering service to you and we look forward to that service continuing. The City of Calgary pays tribute to the men and women who have been part of The City's of Calgary Emergency Medical Services and thanks them for the dedicated and professional service they provide Calgarians.
