Obtaining or Renewing Your Licence

Animal & Bylaw Services

How to obtain / renew your cat or dog licence:

Online
You can obtain or renew your animal licence External Site. online.  You will need to pay with a Visa, Mastercard or an American Express card.  

Please keep your e-mail confirmation as proof of payment until you receive your Animal Licence Certificate.

In Person
Licences can be purchased by visiting the Animal Services Centre, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m, Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by going to The City of Calgary Assessment, Tax and Licence Customer Service Counter on the third floor of the Municipal Building, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Payment can be made with cheque, cash, debit or credit card.

By Phone
Call 3-1-1 or 403-268 -CITY (2489) - if calling from outside Calgary.  You can pay the licensing fee over the phone with VISA, MasterCard or American Express (conditions may apply).  

By Mail
Print the Animal Licence Application PDF File (47KB) or pick one up from our office, your veterinary clinic, or the Municipal Building.  Mail the completed form, along with a cheque made payable to The City of Calgary to: The City of Calgary Animal Services Centre, 2201 Portland St. S.E., T2G 4M7.

At a Bank
Provide a bank teller or an automatic bank machine with your payment and your Animal Licence Invoice.  Most chartered banks, trust companies, credit unions and Alberta Treasury Branches in Calgary will accept payment for animal licences.

At a Night Depository
Pay by cheque or money order at 801 3 St. S.E.  Please do not put cash in the Night Depository.

When paying in person at the Municipal Building or at your bank, keep the top stamped portion of the renewal notice.  This is proof of payment until you receive your Animal Licence Certificate.

Please note: The fine for not licensing your cat or dog is $250.00.

Under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, citizens no longer need to provide a copy of a spay/neuter certificate  to qualify for a reduced licence fee. However, under this new bylaw, making a false declaration regarding the licensing of an animal carries a $500.00 fine.
