All About SNIC
Keeping our roads safe is a shared responsibility.
Roads has a pre-planned, measured response to snowfall that helps make roadways safe and efficient called snow and ice control (SNIC). During winter months Roads has crews available around the clock to react to a snow event. Roads maintains public thoroughfares by:
- Anti-icing before a snow event
- Sanding, salting, and plowing roadways
- Snow removal and storage
- Sidewalk snow removal in the downtown core
- Snow fencing where required
- Roads maintains road rights-of-way, Transit is responsible for clearing snow and ice at LRT stations, and Parks is responsible for the pathway system.
Interim Policy
The current Snow and Ice control policy is being reviewed. Please see the 2010 Interim Policy
(53 KB) and frequently asked questions regarding the interim policy.
What's different between the old and interim policies?
Several elements of the policy have changed. Significant aspects include:
- maintenance of an additional 7,000 lane kilometres of Roads, comprising residential streets and known trouble spots
- maintenance of priority one routes, primary spot sanding and residential spot sanding to be treated at the same time.
- More intense focus on known trouble spots including, but not limited to: bus stops, steep grades and high collision locations
- removal of windrows at the discretion of the Road Maintenance Manager
It's important to note that parked vehicles, parking spaces and driveways may be impeded and sidewalks may be covered – home owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from those areas.
