The City of Calgary: Pet Licensing Campaign

Pet Licensing Campaign 2009

Animal & Bylaw Services

Licensing Campaign November 9th-30th.

Free 6-Month Licences:

Pet owners who have never licensed their dog or cat can apply for a free 6-month licence.

Citizens can obtain their free 6-month licence by contacting 3-1-1 or by coming down in person to Animal Services at 2201 Portland Street SE. This offer is not available online or through the 3rd Floor cashiers in the Municipal Building.

Anyone who does not come to voluntarily apply for a free licence and is stopped by an officer will be at risk for a $250 ticket and expected to purchase a licence.

Lapsed Licences:

Any pet owner who has let their pet's licence lapse can renew the licence with no questions asked and no back charges for the lapsed licence.  These owners are not eligible for the free 6-month licence.

These owners can renew the licence by contacting 3-1-1, coming down to Animal Services or by renewing online at Calgary.ca/animalservices.

Once again, if owners do not voluntarily take advantage of this offer and they are stopped by an officer, they are at risk for a $250 ticket and will be expected to licence their pet.

The value of licensing:

All Calgarians benefit when the pets in our city are licensed because it enables Animal & Bylaw Services to reunite pets with their owners.  This reduces the number of pets sitting in our city shelters and the associated costs of caring for them. It also means that there are fewer pets euthanized and this is something that Calgarians can be proud of.  It helps us to increase our reputation as a city where pets are wanted and humanely treated.

The cost of a one-year licence:

  • for puppies (up to six months old) and altered dogs - $31.00;
  • for unaltered dogs - $52.00.
  • altered cats - $10.00
  • unaltered kittens (up to six months old) - $15.00
  • unaltered cats - $30.00

Your animal licence fees allow us to:

  • Feed and shelter cats and dogs in a veterinarian inspected facility.
  • Provide emergency medical care for injured cats and dogs.
  • Operate our adoption program.
  • Educate cat and dog owners about responsible pet ownership.
  • Help neighbors resolve their animal-related problems.
  • Return lost cats and dogs and enforce the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw without requiring funding from city taxes.
