The City of Calgary: Calgary Synergy Group

Calgary Synergy Group

Environmental & Safety Management

The City of Calgary is participating in a Calgary-based Synergy Group. A Synergy group is a non-profit group of organizations and citizens that focus on a principled, balanced and sustained approach to energy and infrastructure development.

There are currently more than 60 Synergy groups in Alberta operating with the support of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) and Synergy Alberta. Synergy groups provide the participants involved with a forum to share information and discuss energy related issues such as resource development in populated areas, infrastructure impacts, health and safety, and emergency planning.

Calgary is located on land rich with a variety of resources beneath the surface such as natural gas, coal bed methane and oil. The mineral rights to these resources are leased to various energy companies. Over the next several years, it is anticipated that the EUB will continue to receive applications to extract these resources within, and adjacent to, Calgary's municipal boundaries. Many of these applications will relate to newly annexed lands.

By working with members of the Calgary Synergy Group, The City will be able to gather and assess information that can best support appropriate residential and/or industrial development and plan city growth, while protecting the environment and the health and safety of Calgarians and neighbouring communities.
