East Village Place Community Space Engagement

We’ve asked for your ideas on how to bring the community space at East Village Place to life. We want to create a space for you to meet your neighbours, make new friends and participate in local events and activities.

Thanks for your input

From August 10 - September 21, we asked for your input on the East Village Place Community Space project. Thank you for submitting your ideas for the new community space at East Village Place (610 - 8 Avenue S.E.).

View the Engagement and Analysis report summarizing the feedback we received through online and in-person engagement.

The input from the community has been incorporated by Calgary Housing Company (CHC) as it works with potential partners to develop the community space. A Request for Information (RFI) was closed in early March. After reviewing these submissions, CHC and The City of Calgary announced in July that Carya Society of Calgary has signed a letter of intent to develop a community space on the first two floors of East Village Place. The community space will reopen to the public in late-2018.

About the project

On June 30, 2016, Calgary Housing Company became the new owner of East Village Place (750 5 St. S.E.).

East Village Place refers to both the 163 apartments and the approximate 23,000 square feet of community space on the first two floors.

The intent of the Calgary Housing Company and The City of Calgary is to develop the first two floors of the building for community use. As part of the plan’s development, The City collaborated with local residents to hear their ideas on how they’d like to see that space used.

Community space is somewhere everyone feels welcome and all can participate. It could be a place where you meet to share a cup of coffee, tell stories or listen to music. It might have programs such as dance classes or painting. There might be games, or food, or a fitness area. Mainly it’s somewhere for people to be together, enjoy each other and be “community.”

We know how important the Golden Age Club was to many of the residents in the East Village and how challenging the last year has been since its closure. Although this space will most likely not be another senior’s club, we encourage everyone to think of how this space could be used by community members from across the neighbourhood.

The ideas you shared over the summer were put together with your neighbours’ ideas and The City assessed whether any themes emerged. These themes were then used to create a Request for Information (RFI). A Request for Information is a process where Calgary Housing Company invites interested organizations to outline how they would like to use the space to meet the community’s needs. Your input, along with other criteria (e.g. financial feasibility) becomes the basis for evaluating proposals. In July 2017, Carya Society of Calgary signed a letter of intent to develop a community space on the first two floors of East Village Place. Carya will now work with an architect to design the space and explore potential sub-lessees.

No. Organizations will have to produce a plan to cover economic rent that covers operating costs and a lifecycle reserve. Ideally, Calgary Housing Company would like one main tenant on the lease who would be responsible for sub-leasing spaces to additional organizations.

As renovations are required to ensure that the space will be suitable for a variety of programs, services, and amenities, the community space will likely be ready for use in late-2018.
