Golfing knowledge and skill levels of participants

The EJ Justice Golf Event is an exciting opportunity for children, with some golf experience and understanding of the rules of golf, to take the next step and share in friendly golf competition and peer play. The rules of the game will be followed, however, will be modified to support young players and ensure the game remains fun, for example, players will pick up their balls at double par and move to the next hole.

There is an expectation that participants will have already learned the basics of the game and played a few rounds. Participants should be familiar with the basic rules, safety and etiquette guidelines of golf.

Please take a moment to review the New to Golf information on our website with your child to confirm their readiness.

As well, this is not a sanctioned tournament and players capable of serious golf competition are encouraged to seek out skilled events to continue their golf development. This level of junior golfer does not align with the intention of The EJ Justice Golf Event.

If your child has not played on a golf course, is not comfortable playing golf by modified rules without direction, has a registered handicap OR plays in competitive golf tournaments, this event would not be appropriate.

  • The City of Golf Courses offer many opportunities for youth and families to learn and enjoy the game of golf including lessons, special offers, subsidized programs and Beginner and Family Nights. Details are available on our website.
  • For the more experienced junior player, Golf Canada offers a variety of competitive opportunities

Who is E.J. Justice?

E.J. served thousands of Albertans; first as a parish priest in the Anglican Church for 25 years; later as a teacher in the Calgary public and secondary school systems; and lastly as a community volunteer.

E.J started this event in 1976 at Lakeview Golf Course because he wanted neighbourhood youth to have the same chance to play in a junior golf event just like the kids at the private courses.

Once it began, E.J. was a one-man-show for years, literally making hundreds of phone calls to ensure junior golfers got out to play, gathered up prizes, pop and food and took money out of his own pocket to cover unforeseen costs.

Years ago, The City Golf Course Operations asked if they could pitch in and run the event on E.J's behalf and name it after him. We are pleased to carry on his vision and tradition. E.J. enjoyed being a part of the community and we do too!

E.J. Justice passed away on September 6, 2004 at the age of 81.

In 2016 we celebrated 40 years of the EJ Justice Junior Golf Event. To commemorate this milestone, we put together a collection ofspecial stories.
