Brazilian Carnival Masks

Supplies:

  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Glue
  • Feathers
  • String or elastic

Carnival is the most famous and lively holiday in Brazil. It is a combination of a traditional Roman Catholic festival with the celebrations of people of African ancestry. Many people make and wear masks to celebrate Carnival

  • Have your child cut a paper plate in half and help them cut holes for eyes.
  • Punch holes in the sides and add a string or elastic to fit their face.
  • Paint the paper plate in bright paint colors and let it dry.
  • Glue feathers around the outside of the plate and then let it dry.

Paper Llama

Supplies:

  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • White paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Hot glue gun or glue

Llamas are related to camels. Ancient people living in the Andes tamed llamas about 5,000 years ago, and they are important animals in Peru.

Llamas had an important place in the Inca culture. They were used as transportation, and their wool was used for clothing and blankets and their meat for food. Today, local Indigenous people use them the same way as the Incas did.

  • Have your child cut a paper plate in half. One half will be for the body and the other half is for the head, legs, and tail.
  • Draw a simple llama neck and head, four legs, and a tail out of one half.
  • Use glue to assemble the llama. Gluing the head, legs, and tail onto the back of the body.
  • Paint a face, ear details, a blanket for it’s back and even a collar if you like.

Pilolo

Supplies:

  • 5 small toys or stuffed animals

Pilolo means "time to look for it" in a Ghanaian language. It's also a game that children play in Ghana where they try to find hidden objects.

  • Have your child choose 5 small toys or stuffed animals
  • Choose a room or use your backyard to play in.
  • Have your child hide their items in the playing space.
  • When they are done, they can shout “Pilolo!” and whoever is home can look for the items.
  • The goal is to find the most items.
