Wellness day 2 grades 4 - 6 learning activities

These activities will help youth Learn about their values and strengths, and how they share them with the world. They can be done alone, but work best with friends over a video chat such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime etc.

Strengths build confidence and a positive attitude about who we are. Values are the principles we stand by when deciding what is right and wrong in the face of moral or social pressure.

Trivia question: Think of the answer in your head. How many bones does your skull have – 2, 5, or 22?

Mindfulness Activity:

  • Sit in a comfortable spot.
  • Take a deep breath in and bring your hands together.
  • Start rubbing your hands together slowly. Now a little bit faster.
  • Count down from 10. When you get to zero stop your rubbing your hands together but keep them pressed together.
  • Notice how they feel and notice the warmth you created with a bit of movement.

Ask your child: if you were a superhero, what would your name be? What superpowers would you have? How would you help people? What words would describe you?

Guide your child through the following superhero exercises:

  • 30 seconds - running on the spot
  • 30 seconds – jumping jacks
  • 30 seconds- jump as high as you can
  • 30 seconds- drop to the floor and pretend you’re “flying” like Superman
  • 30 seconds- push ups
  • 30 seconds- air kick - (don’t kick anyone)
  • 30 seconds- air punch - (don’t punch anyone)
  • 30 seconds- drop to the floor and belly crawl
  • Lay flat on your back and take 5 deep breaths

Repeat 3 times.

Trivia question: Think of the answer in your head. How many smells can a nose remember – 5 thousand, 50 thousand, or 5 million?

Mindfulness Activity:

  • Sit in a comfortable spot.
  • Bring one hand to your belly and your other hand to your heart.
  • Take a deep breath in. Deep breath out. Do you feel your heart? Notice how fast or slow it is beating.
  • As you take a deep breath in try to make both of your hands lift.
  • Breathe into your belly and your chest. Breathe out from your chest and your belly.
  • Notice how you feel.

Have your child cut a blank piece of paper into a square. Use the instructions to make a fortune teller.




Write the name of four different colours on each of the four outside squares. Write the numbers 1-8 on the eight triangles inside the fortune teller. Flip up the eight triangles and write the following questions:

  • Who is your favorite superhero?
  • If you could have one super power, what would it be?
  • What are 3 things you are good at?
  • What are 3 things the person in front of you is good at?
  • What are 3 things you can be better at?
  • If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
  • How can you improve and master a skill?
  • What are some pros and cons about being a superhero?

When your child has finished their fortune teller, take turns using it and asking each other questions.​

Have your child write a daily journal to reflect on their feelings and thoughts. Use the following to help them get started:

  • Make a list of all the things you are good at (Example: being a friend, listening, helping, playing, etc.). Be as specific as possible.
  • Looking at your list, do you think you are good at these things because you learned and practiced them or because you were born with it?

Trivia question: Think of the answer in your head. What is air made up of? Mindfulness Activity:

  • Put up one hand, palm facing out and fingers spread apart.
  • Using a finger on your other hand, breathe in and move/trace from the base of your thumb up to the tip.
  • Move/trace your finger down the other side of your thumb and breathe out.
  • Do the same with the remaining four fingers, taking deep breaths in and out as you move your finger.
  • After you’ve reached the second side of your pinky finger, you will have done 5 complete deep breaths.

Have your child create a poster of themselves as a superhero (they can use their superhero drawing from before). Have them write their strengths, a positive statement about themselves or quote on the poster. Here are some examples:

  • "I can discover great new things about myself"
  • "I have special qualities. I can share them with the world"
  • "It is important to learn what strengths I have, use them, and build on them"
  • "Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom" – Tao Ti Ching
  • "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?" – Dr. Seuss
  • "Success is achieved by developing our strengths, not by eliminating our weaknesses" – Marilyn vos Savant
  • "Teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength" – Maya Angelou

Decorate the walls with other inspiring posters, advertising, photos and other artwork created by your child.
