Park of the week Nose Hill Park

Calgary is filled with amazing parks. More than 8,000 hectares of parkland and natural areas are maintained by The City.

Things to keep in mind while enjoying the outdoors

  • Maintain physical distancing: minimum 2 metres or 6 feet  (the length of a bicycle) away from fellow explorers.
  • Take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints.
  • Only venture outside if you're feeling healthy and not exhibiting any symptoms

Located in the North West, it is the largest City of Calgary park. Many of the trails that are on Nose Hill Park are paved. Other trails are packed ground.

Trails may be partially snow covered or muddy depending on the season. If you are planning to explore, please wear proper footwear. Choose shoes with a good grip that you don't mind getting dirty.

Historic Value

Humans have lived in the area for at least 10,500 years. Nose Hill had natural lookouts, protective coulees and bison wintering grounds that attracted Native people to the area. There are many archaeological sites on the plateau and in the coulee including tipi rings.

Be on the Lookout

Porcupines can be found in Nose Hill Park resting in the trees during the day. They are nocturnal animals, however you may spot them eating plants, leaves and tree bark during the day. Although they cannot throw their quills, please keep your distance.

Did you know?

Rough Fescue Grass is not only an important endangered prairie species, but is also Alberta's Provincial Grass Species. Only 5% of the original Alberta fescue remains, and Nose Hill Park has the largest parch in an urban setting in North America.
