These activities will help youth build a positive view of themselves and recognize their strengths while thinking about media. They can be done alone or with friends over a video chat such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.

  • cardboard
  • scrap paper
  • scissors
  • markers or pencil crayons
  • thumb tacks

Message boards are often used to advertise or promote ideas and information to the public.

Create your own inspiring message board:

    Find a sturdy piece of cardboard. Decorate it with a pattern or doodles.
  • Write friendly or motivating messages on scrap pieces of paper and pin them to your board with thumb tacks.
  • Put your message board outside your front door, in a window or find a creative place where your neighbors and friends can see it.
  • Change the messages each week to surprise and delight people who see your board.

Encourage your peers to join you and post their message board somewhere it can be seen as well. If you are on social media, post a picture of your message board with the hashtag #throughthewindow. See what types of messages others are posting and tag @antyxarts to have your board shared with others in Calgary.

For this activity, connect with one or more friends on a video chat like Skype, Zoom or Facetime.

Empathy is being able to sense other people's emotions and imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling. It’s being able to walk in someone else’s shoes.

Talk to your friend about how you are doing. Ask your friend what has been difficult for them over the past few weeks. Ask what’s been going well for them. Think about these tips while you are talking:

  • Be a good listener.
  • Don’t react and give your opinion.
  • Show that you’ve heard their feelings. E.g. It sounds like you are bored because there is nothing to do.
  • Get feedback, ask open ended questions. How did that make you feel?
  • Be supportive - you don’t need to have the answers.
  • Use comforting words instead of judging. I’m here for you, and we will get through this together.
  • Thank them for opening up to you.

Using empathy takes time and life experiences. Be patient and try this more often.​

Community is a feeling of belonging, and it is a relationship among people. Your communities are the people and places that are connected to you.

Get permission from your parents to use chalk on your driveway or sidewalk to write your favorite things about your community. Add pictures to brighten up your messages.​​
