5 Avenue S.W. traffic operation

Starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 10, traffic setups for the two-way traffic pattern on 5 Avenue S.W. between 5 Street and 11 Street S.W. will come to an end. Traffic will revert to its permanent eastbound traffic pattern.

What do I need to know?

Traffic will be moving permanently eastbound on 5 Avenue S.W. starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 10. Additionally, there will be some modifications to parking on 5 Avenue S.W. There will be no parking permitted along this stretch of 5 Avenue S.W. on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to accommodate peak traffic.

Why is the lane reversal ending?

The City of Calgary first trialed the 5 Avenue Lane reversal to optimize use of the existing transportation network and to improve traffic circulation. Following the initial implementation which saw the lane reversal installed during the afternoon peak, the reversal was expanded to all day, expect during the morning rush (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.).

The lane reversal was a temporary installation that used daily traffic set-ups by road crews. There are currently no plans for funding to install the reversal permanently, and an end date of June 10 has been selected.

Will the lane reversal be installed again at a later date?

The City may consider reinstating a permanent lane reversal in the future, should funding become available.
