5 Avenue S.W. traffic operation

Lane reversal discontinued

As of 6 a.m. on Monday, June 10, traffic setups for the two-way traffic pattern on 5 Avenue S.W. between 5 Street and 11 Street S.W. came to an end. Traffic has reverted to its permanent eastbound traffic pattern.

What do I need to know?

Traffic has moved permanently eastbound on 5 Avenue S.W. since at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 10. Additionally, there are some modifications to parking on 5 Avenue S.W. There is no parking permitted along this stretch of 5 Avenue S.W. on weekdays between 7 - 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 - 6 p.m. to accommodate peak traffic.

Why did the lane reversal end?

The City of Calgary first trialed the 5 Avenue Lane reversal to optimize use of the existing transportation network and to improve traffic circulation. Following the initial implementation which saw the lane reversal installed during the afternoon peak, the reversal was expanded to all day, except during the morning rush (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.).

The lane reversal was a temporary installation that used daily traffic set-ups by road crews. There are currently no plans for funding to install the reversal permanently, and an end date of June 10 was selected.

Will the lane reversal be installed again at a later date?

The City may consider reinstating a permanent lane reversal in the future, should funding become available.
