17 Ave SW construction - Construction

Status of 17 Avenue S.W. construction project

After finishing the paving and wrapping up the remaining work on 17 Avenue S. over the past few days, the Avenue between Macleod Trail and 5 Street S.W is now fully open to traffic and on-street parking.

The #6 and #7 buses are back to running their regular routes and we're in the process of installing the bus stops to their original locations.

Remaining work for this year

1 Street S.E. and 17 Avenue S., near the intersection, will be reduced to two lanes on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., to install new traffic signals. Calgary Police Service will be onsite to direct traffic until the new traffic lights are fully operational.

Through the fall and winter, there will be some minor street light and traffic signal work on the east end that will require short term, on-street parking closures. This work on the street lights and traffic signals is weather dependent.

If you have questions, or would like to know more about the project, please email us at cityofcalgary17@calgary.ca.

Schedule Update - 2018

The following work that was originally scheduled for this construction season at the locations detailed below, is now scheduled for spring 2018 (April-June). This work will require single-lane closures and some on-street parking closures.

  • Macleod Trail - 2 Street S.W.: replace the temporary asphalt in sidewalks with permanent concrete
  • 1 Street - 2 Street S.W.: finish tree planting on both sides and minor electrical work on south side

The City will contact business prior to work starting, and we will be working with businesses to minimize the disruption as much as possible.

We are starting to plan the schedule for 2018, and will be engaging with the 17th Ave BIA and a number of stakeholders along the avenue to review the lessons that we've learned from this year's work, and help plan the 2018 construction season. Our goal is to have the 2018 construction schedule prepared and publicly available as soon as possible.
