Anderson Road S.W. widening

Project update - June 19, 2019

Construction activities continue with the goal of completing this project by the end of 2019. We'd like to thank the residents of southwest Calgary for their patience and understanding as we move forward.

Anderson Road/Woodpark Blvd. Intersection – major closure over July long-weekend

Woodpark Blvd. access at Anderson Road will be closed from 9 a.m., Friday, June 28, to 5 a.m., Tuesday, July 2. This closure is necessary to allow crews to finish intersection work. During this time, people can access Anderson Rd. and community from 24 Street SW. All lanes on Anderson Rd. remain open throughout the weekend.

Calgary Transit detours will be posted at www.calgarytransit.com/service-updates, when they are confirmed.

Once Woodpark Blvd. reopens on Tuesday morning, the yield signs will be put back in place, until the Anderson Rd. construction is completed in fall 2019. Crews will be back in the fall to finish the final paving.

Anderson Road and 24 Street intersection: OPENING June 24

Driving restrictions at the intersection until the end of June, so crews can finish construction.

  • No left-hand turn, from 24 St. SW to westbound Anderson Rd.
  • When driving west, use 130 Ave. SW access at 37 St. SW; or Woodland Blvd., to access Anderson Rd.
  • You can drive in the other directions at the intersection, but there will be single lane closures

Once the intersection work is finished, all the new driving lanes will permanently open, including the dual left-turns in all directions.

Anderson Road Widening between 14 Street and 24 Street - Phase 1 South

Work on widening the eastbound lanes of Anderson Road is scheduled to last until the end of July. During this phase, east bound traffic will be shifted to the north to allow for the construction of future eastbound lanes to the south.

Anderson Road Widening between 14 Street and 24 Street - Phase 2 North

Work on widening the westbound lanes of Anderson Road is scheduled to begin at the beginning of August and last until early October. During Phase 2, all traffic will be shifted to the south which will allow reconstruction of the existing westbound lanes.

Noise Barrier Construction

Construction of the noise wall on the south side of Anderson Road, east of Woodpark Boulevard, will take place in 2019.

About the project

This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary's road network to the ring road and will accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR).

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. It includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. This, coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes it a more attractive option for people traveling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City's Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of noise barriers are shown here.
