Anderson Road S.W. widening

Project update - June 11, 2019

Construction activities continue with the goal of completing this project by the end of 2019. We'd like to thank the residents of southwest Calgary for their patience and understanding as we move forward.

Anderson Road/Elbow Drive Intersection – major lane closures
The intersection will have a number of major restrictions and paving work, from 5 a.m. Saturday, June 15, until 5 a.m. Monday, June 17. This work is the last step to completing the Elbow Dr. intersection.

  • OPEN
    • All right-turns at intersection
    • Pedestrian crossing at intersection
    • All other intersections along Anderson Rd.
    • Elbow Drive, heading south and north across Anderson Rd.
    • All left turns at intersection.
    • Anderson Rd. reduced to one lane in each direction.
    • People travelling north and south need to use Macleod Trail or 14 Street.

Work between 14 Street and Elbow Drive is substantially complete.

Anderson Road Widening between 14 Street and 24 Street - Phase 1 South
Work on widening the eastbound lanes of Anderson Road is scheduled to last until the end of July. During this phase, east bound traffic will be shifted to the north to allow for the construction of future eastbound lanes to the south.

Anderson Road Widening between 14 Street and 24 Street - Phase 2 North
Work on widening the westbound lanes of Anderson Road is scheduled to begin at the beginning of August and last until early October. During Phase 2, all traffic will be shifted to the south which will allow reconstruction of the existing westbound lanes.

Anderson Road from 24 Street west to the TUC Boundary
We have entered the final phase of construction for this intersection until the end of June 2019. However, there will be some restrictions in place at the intersection so crews can complete construction:

  • No left-hand turn, from 24 Street SW to westbound Anderson Road
  • Motorists travelling west can use the 130 Avenue SW access at 37 Street SW; or Woodland Blvd., to access Anderson Road
  • All other movements will remain open at the intersection, but there will be single lane closures.

Once this intersection work is finished in late June, all the new traffic lanes will be PERMANENTLY OPEN, including the dual left-turn lanes in all directions.

Noise Barrier Construction
Construction of the noise wall on the south side of Anderson Road, east of Woodpark Boulevard, will take place in 2019.

About the project

This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary's road network to the ring road and will accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR).

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. It includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. This, coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes it a more attractive option for people traveling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City's Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of noise barriers are shown here.
