BRT Stations

The BRT stations are designed to improve the Calgary Transit customer experience. There will be standard features at all the BRT stations on the Southwest BRT including benches, waste receptacles, real time travel information, heated shelters, and lighting. Stations on all the BRT routes will have a similar look and feel and will connect customers with sidewalks and pathways close to the stations.

Some of the stations will be smaller in scale to be respectful of the location and context of the neighbourhood where the station is built. For the Southwest BRT, there will be 21 stations built for service start in 2019.

See what we're working on

There will be a number of intersection changes and improvements as we're building the Southwest BRT.

We're building a transit only ramp at the southeast corner of the Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail S.W. interchange, and widening the shoulder lane of eastbound Glenmore Trail for buses to bypass traffic during congestion. We'll also be adding a new transit ramp connection to Hospital Road at 14 Street and Glenmore Trail S.W.

Project plans for the area

Transit only ramp - North of Glenmore Trail

Construction of the transit only ramp at the southeast corner of the Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail S.W. interchange will be starting again in May 2018. The new road will only be used by BRT buses during times of congestion on Crowchild Trail to the Glenmore Trail flyover. A segment of the noise wall will be removed and replaced to accommodate the transit only lane, and we will be planting landscaping in the area to provide separation from nearby houses.

We will also be widening the shoulder lane of eastbound Glenmore Trail. The shoulder lanes will be used by buses, when safe to do so, during rush hour to bypass congestion on Glenmore Trail similar to the current operation on Crowchild Trail. The shoulder lane will lead to a bus only connection from the exit ramp of Glenmore Trail onto 14th Street S.W. directly to the Rockyview Hospital.

There will be a number of changes and improvements as we're building the Southwest BRT. The transit lanes have been revised at the intersection of 14th Street and Heritage Drive S.W. to minimize the impacts to intersections on 14th Street. We will also be making changes to the existing pedestrian bridge just south of 75 Avenue S.W.

Project plans for the area

14th Street & Heritage Drive S.W. intersection

The dedicated transit lanes have been revised to minimize impacts to intersections on 14 Street. The transitway and station were moved to the west of the intersection, and will cross the access road into Heritage Park where there is less daily commuter traffic. This design maintains the existing entrance characteristics of the park. The BRT station is located close to the existing pedestrian crossing, and close to the connecting electric trolley station. The trains at the entrance of Heritage Park will remain in their current location, and we are working with Heritage Park to integrate the train with the adjacent station.

The trolley will require a realignment to accommodate this design, and we are working with Heritage Park to determine the best time to realign the track.

14 Street & 75 Ave pedestrian bridge

A portion of the existing pedestrian and cyclist overpass just south of 75 Avenue S.W. will be replaced as part of the Southwest BRT project. The ramp on the east side of 14 Street S.W. will remain, and a new bridge deck, and connection to the BRT station at 75 Avenue S.W. will be built. A new ramp system will be implemented at the west side of the bridge, that connects directly to the pathway system towards the hospital for improved accessibility. When the pedestrian bridge is removed, pedestrians and cyclists will temporarily cross at the south side of the intersection of 14 Street and 75 Avenue S.W.

There will be a number of intersection changes and improvements as we're building the Southwest BRT. We will be building a pedestrian bridge just north of 90 Avenue, and new underpass at 90 Avenue for BRT busses.

Pedestrian bridge – 90th Avenue S.W.

The Southwest BRT station will be on 14 Street S.W., just north of 90 Avenue, beside the Glenmore Landing Shopping Centre. The bridge will provide a safe, efficient crossing for pedestrians and cyclists that connects to the new BRT station, Glenmore Landing Shopping Centre, the Glenmore Reservoir pathway system and the surrounding communities of Palliser, Bayview, Pumphill, and Haysboro.

The City presented three possible locations for the pedestrian bridge last year. Based on feedback from the community we have revised the alignment of the bridge to incorporate features that were desirable for the community, as well as create an efficient and safe alternative to crossing at the intersection of 14 Street and 90 Avenue S.W.

Underpass at 14 Street and 90 Avenue S.W.

The design of the underpass at 14 Street and 90 Avenue S.W. has been finalized. The underpass allows buses to travel through the intersection without impacting vehicle traffic, and will have access to the BRT station located near Glenmore Landing.

There will be a number of intersection changes and improvements as we're building the Southwest BRT. The final designs for these improvements incorporated community input, where possible, and will be complete by the fall of 2019. The major work at the intersection of 14 Street and 90 Avenue S.W. is building the underpass for the BRT buses.

There will be a number of intersection changes and improvements as we're building the Southwest BRT. Between Southland Drive and 90 Avenue S.W. there will be improvements to the intersection at 14 Street and Southland Drive S.W. as well as changes to the intersection of Southland Drive and Bradbury Drive S.W.

Intersection improvements

14 St & Southland Dr S.W.

Improvements to the intersection of 14 Street and Southland Drive SW were identified as part of the Traffic Congestion Relief Program. In order to coordinate the work and take advantage of pricing within a larger construction contract, the intersection improvements will be built as part of the Southwest BRT project.

The improvements at this intersection include adding dual southbound and eastbound left turn lanes and auxiliary lanes for the westbound and eastbound right turn movements. Transit queue jump lanes on Southland Drive are being built at the intersection as well because Southland Drive is part of the Primary Transit Network.

These improvements reduce the overall intersection delay in excess of 20 per cent, especially during the afternoon rush hour.

Bradbury Dr & Southland Dr S.W.

In order for buses to enter and exit the dedicated transit lanes, a transit-only left turn bay will be built in the eastbound direction of Southland Drive, along with a transit-only access across from Bradbury Drive.

A traffic light will be installed at the intersection so buses can safely make the left hand turn onto the dedicated transit lanes. Traffic headed northbound on Bradbury Drive wanting to turn left on Southland Drive will be required to wait for a green light to make the left hand turn.

There will be a number of changes and improvements as we're building the Southwest BRT.A roundabout and terminus station at 24 Street S.W. and Woodpark Boulevard will be built within the road right of way, and there will be no impacts to park space or private property.

Roundabout and terminus station

The roundabout design for BRT buses at the intersection of 24 Street S.W. and Woodpark Boulevard will be built in the road right of way, and there will be no impacts to park space or private property. The roundabout allows vehicles and busses to travel through this intersection in a safe, and efficient way.

Construction of the roundabout will be built as part of the Woodlands, Woodbine Community Drainage Improvement project. The City will be installing a new underground storm turn in the media of 24 Street S.W. from Woodview Drive to Wood Park Boulevard, and south into Fish Creek Provincial Park.

The terminal station will be located on the east side of 24 Street S.W. and will also have a washroom facility for transit operators only.

There are no park and ride facilities being built as part of the Southwest BRT project.
