Title: Acting General Manager, Utilities & Environmental Protection
Areas of focus: As General Manager of Utilities & Environmental Protection, Dan is focused on protecting public health and the environment for current and future generations, and helping all employees work safely. He overseas business units responsible for: providing safe, clean drinking water; wastewater collection and treatment: storm water management and watershed protection; landfill management, waste collection and diversion; and environmental and safety management.
Career history: Dan graduated from University of Calgary in 1984 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has over 30 years of diverse and valuable experience in the water industry. His passion for the water industry is reflected in his voluntary pursuits with the American Water Works Association and the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association.
He joined The City from the private sector in 1988, holding project engineering positions in the Water Utility and was a Production Superintendent before being named Manager of Construction Services in 2000. In 2006, Dan became Manager of Water Treatment and was named the Director of Water Services in 2011. As Director of Water Services, Dan oversaw the operational elements of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services that serve over 1.3 million people. During Dan’s time as Director he played a key role in fostering a keen attention to regulatory performance, advancing the values of the organization (4C’s – Commitment, Competence, Character and Collaboration) across the Water Utility, and strengthening the Utility’s focus on safety and customer value.
