Areas of focus: As the General Manager of the Transportation Department, Doug oversees a team of nearly 5,000 employees that plans, designs, builds, operates and maintains Calgary's transportation system: Transportation Planning, Transportation Infrastructure, Calgary Transit and Roads.
The Transportation Department works to provide a safe, reliable, efficient, customer focused transportation system that supports all modes of travel and promotes sustainability and smart growth.
The system contributes significantly to making Calgary a healthy, vibrant and dynamic community supporting the needs of residents, businesses and tourists.
Career history: Doug brings nearly 30 years of experience as an engineer, strategic leader and technical expert bringing a inclusive, 'people-first' approach to his position as the General Manager of Transportation.
A life-long learner and University of Calgary alumnus, Doug holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, a Master's Degree in Engineering (specializing in transportation engineering), a Master of Business Administration and a Master's Certificate in Municipal Leadership.
He also is committed to giving back to the community by holding roles as Chair of Child Find Alberta as well as the Chair of the Canadian Urban Transit Association.
Doug started his professional career as a resident engineer focusing on roads, civil infrastructure projects and roadway design before he joined The City of Calgary as a transportation engineer.
Since coming to The City of Calgary, he has held progressively more senior roles, working as a Senior Forecasting Engineer, the Manager of Transportation Data, the Executive Assistant to the General Manager of Transportation, and then to Calgary Transit where he became the Manager of Service Design.
In March of 2012, Doug was selected as the Director of Calgary Transit, and has been in that role since taking over the General Manager position in September of 2019.

Bringing a down-to-earth, approachable and collaborative style, Doug strives to foster a culture on inclusion, collaboration and problem solving. He values strong relationships, and that's evidenced by the rapport he carries with colleagues and external clients and customers.
Doug is a proponent of taking a customer-centric perspective, and firmly believes that those on the 'frontlines' are the heart of the organization.
