Have an informal meeting

If you notice your employee is increasingly using sick time, have a conversation with them. Increased sick time can be due to any number of causes, many of which are entirely valid. An initial conversation will help gather more information so that you can better support your employee and reduce absences.

During that initial conversation

  • Remind your employee that you care about them.
  • Make sure your employee is aware of attendance expectations.
  • Identify specific concerns regarding an employee’s attendance issue to make sure your employee is aware of the problem and understands why it is a problem.
  • Work with the employee to understand the general nature for the absences (For example: is it related to a health issue, family or home issue, work environment/ work relationship). You are not looking for details or to diagnose but to be able to offer support and suggestions for resources.
  • Ask the employee what steps they are taking to help them be able to attend work on a more regular basis.

Dealing with these situations can be difficult for supervisors. Be sure you get the support you need as well.
