The Apr. 10, 2018, Priorities and Finance Committee meeting included:

Olympic bid proposed public engagement approach

The City of Calgary has confirmation from the provincial and federal governments that it will receive funding to explore the potential for a bid to host the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This funding is subject to several conditions, including that The City hold a plebiscite. Administration proposed a public engagement approach, including a plebiscite, and recommended it be approved and initiated as soon as possible to meet this condition. Council will reaffirm their support prior to proceeding with further work at the April 16, 2018, meeting of Council. Pending the outcome of this reaffirmation, approval of the public engagement approach has been postponed.

The City’s strategic plan principles

The One Calgary Service Plans and Budgets 2019-2022 (Strategic Plan) will deliver on Council’s direction throughout the next business cycle. Five over-arching strategic plan principles were presented to help guide The City in its ongoing efforts to create value for the citizens of Calgary. These five principles focus on vision, strategy, value creation, accountability and continuous improvement:

  1. Address citizen needs and long-term quality of life aspirations.
  2. Use a council driven, integrated approach to planning for service delivery.
  3. Focus on what matters most to citizens and customers and maximize their value for city services.
  4. Monitor the value generated through services by using performance measures, and reporting.
  5. Seek to improve services and processes and adjust on an on-going basis.

Administration recommended that council approve these principles, which will provide structure in the development of The City’s Strategic Plan.
