Resilient Calgary

Council received this report on the results of the Resilient Calgary Agenda-Setting Workshop and next steps in the development of Calgary’s Resilience Strategy for information. The report provided an update to Council on the activities regarding resilience, information regarding The City’s membership in the 100 Resilient Cities global network, shared engagement highlights following the Agenda Setting Workshop, and outlined the resilience strategy development workplan and alignment to the upcoming service plans and budgets process for 2019-2022.

Downtown Economic Summit Report

Council received this report for information. The City of Calgary (The City) and its partners Calgary Economic Development and Calgary Municipal Land Corporation are taking action to keep Calgarians working, invest in infrastructure, and increase the effectiveness of local government. It is important that The City and its partners take deliberate steps and use a more nimble and responsive approach to identify the city’s best growth prospects to reduce the impact of the economic downturn on citizens and local businesses and help ensure Calgary’s ongoing success into the future.

Economic Development Investment Fund

Council approved the creation of an Economic Development Investment Fund. To initiate the short-term start up of the EDIF, Council approved of $10 using million from the Fiscal Stability Reserve (FSR). Council directed Administration to work with the Calgary Arts Development Authority and bring a report and recommendations through the Priorities and Finance Committee no later than July 2017. The City of Calgary and its partners are taking action to keep Calgarians working, invest in infrastructure, and increase the effectiveness of local government. Across North America, Economic Development Investment Funds (EDIF) have helped relieve conditions of economic distress and increased diversification, while providing significant returns on investment for communities, citizens, businesses and non-profit organizations.

Olympic Bid Exploration Update

Council received this report for information. The report provided an update on the Calgary Bid Exploration Committee’s (CBEC) work to date. The presentation included CBEC’s research, investigation techniques and high level findings as applied by their subcommittees. Administration will continue its work in reviewing CBEC’s final report utilizing the Council approved Administration Feasibility Assessment and recommendations will be included as part of the July 24, 2017, meeting of Council.
