David Duckworth Appointed as City of Calgary’s New City Manager

Calgary (August 1, 2019) – The City of Calgary is officially under new management. Today, Mayor Naheed Nenshi announced City Council’s decision to hire current Utilities and Environmental Protection General Manager David Duckworth. He will assume the new role beginning August 30, 2019.

“When searching for the person who will lead The City of Calgary’s Administrative team, you have to consider an important question. Do you want a person who comes from within the organization and knows how our systems work, or do you want an outside perspective to bring new ideas to Calgary?” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “In David’s case, we actually check both of those boxes. There will be little time lost in getting to know his way around City Hall while also bringing forward new ideas to help us deliver the high quality of service Calgarians expect.”

David Duckworth joined the City of Calgary in March 2018 as General Manager of Utilities and Environmental Protection. He brings 29 years of progressive local government experience, including 21 years in senior leadership roles, to the role of City Manager. Prior to joining the City of Calgary, David spent more than 27 years working with the City of Vancouver, Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, and the City of Kamloops.

Hailing from Langley, British Columbia, David holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering and an MBA from the University of British Columbia. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

“For the past 18 months, I’ve been proud to support the dedicated and professional City employees who collectively work hard to make life better every day for Calgarians,” said David Duckworth. “Public service has been rooted in my family, ever since my father spent many years during my childhood  serving the people of Langley, first as Alderman, and then as Mayor. I am humbled and honoured to accept this role, and I am committed to ensuring that Calgarians receive the citizen-centred, quality public services they expect from their City.”

Mayor Nenshi and Councillors Ward Sutherland and Jeff Davison participated in the search process with support from Margaret Campbell with global executive search firm Odgers Berndtson.w
