Let me introduce you all to Azmain – your Mayor for a Day!

It’s one of the best days of the year when I get to welcome a student to spend the day with me and my team, as well as some my colleagues at the City of Calgary.

Mayor for a Day is a contest held every year by the Mayor’s Youth Council through Youth Central. Students between the ages of 12-18 submit their three ideas to make Calgary even better. This year, we’re lucky to welcome 16-year-old Azmain who is a Grade 11 student at Ernest Manning High School. His three ideas for improving the community centred around addressing chronic stress and mental health, championing civic discourse and increasing engagement, and educating teens around the dangers of vaping.

Mayor for a Day is a great opportunity not only for the students who submit their ideas, but also for me to hear from young people from across Calgary about what they think needs improving in our community. There were certainly some themes we heard loud and clear in this year’s submission, including mental health and addiction (vaping in particular). Young people in our community are thinking about mental health and talking about it in ways previous generations have not and I’m excited to work with youth in this city around the Mental Health and Addiction Strategy we’re developing.

We’ve had a great day with Azmain meeting with folks from our City Administration to discuss his ideas. Another great young leader for this city.
