Office of the Mayor

Accountability

Accountability

Since Mayor Nenshi was first elected in 2010, he has worked to strengthen accountability, disclosure, and ethics rules for City Council. The results include the creation of an Integrity and Ethics Office, a strengthened whistle-blower program, and clear policies that require the disclosure of gifts, meetings, and office expenses.

Mayor Nenshi has been sharing this information even before there were specific policies in place.

Meetings disclosure

The Office of the Mayor discloses all meetings held with visitors to the office. As per policy guidelines, this information is disclosed quarterly and it does not include personal meetings (ie: family and friend visits), interviews with journalists, and the names of City of Calgary employees.

Gifts disclosure

The Office of the Mayor discloses all gifts given to Mayor Nenshi and his team. As per policy guidelines, this information is disclosed semi-annually and includes the estimated costs of all gifts whenever possible.

Budget and expenses disclosure

The Office of the Mayor discloses its full budget and a separate breakdown of expenses. This will include any travel that is sometimes required by Mayor Nenshi and his team. However, to save taxpayer money, some travel is paid for by third parties—this is also disclosed.
